Supporting Samoa Adventist School

At ASVAC this year, we are supporting Samoa Adventist School by raising funds to build much-needed staff accommodation. The current houses, built in the 1960s and 70s, are no longer fit for purpose, despite ongoing efforts to maintain them.

With your support, we can help create safe, lasting homes for the dedicated teachers serving in Samoa.

Teachers | Toni Hatten-Roberts

The Science of Learning draws from cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and educational research to explore how students learn best. It offers evidence-based insights into memory, attention, motivation, and instructional design, helping educators align their teaching with how the brain processes and retains information.

At the core of this research is Explicit Instruction—a structured, direct teaching approach proven to significantly improve student outcomes. Unlike implicit or discovery-based learning, Explicit Instruction provides clear learning goals, step-by-step modelling, guided practice, immediate feedback, and opportunities for independent mastery.

This method reduces unnecessary cognitive load, allowing students to efficiently transfer new knowledge into long-term memory.

When delivered consistently and with fidelity, Explicit Instruction leads to greater academic achievement, enhanced student confidence, and more equitable learning outcomes across diverse classroom settings.

About the Presenter
Toni Hatten-Roberts is a leader in the Science of Learning, specialising in explicit instruction and curriculum design. Award-winning and research-driven, she co-founded Mastery Schools Australia and COGlearn, advancing innovative, evidence-based educational practices nationally and internationally.

Teachers | Leonie Anstey

Effective mathematics teaching meets the needs of all learners. The importance of the relationships of the teacher, the student with the content determines the pedagogical approach to ensure that learning progress and goals are met. To do this mathematics educators draw upon a range of repertoire of strategies to support student learning, ensuring that instruction is both purposeful and responsive.

These practices are the core aspects of mathematics teaching: purposeful planning, developing mathematical proficiency, and adaptive approaches to support all learners. Each practice serves as a foundation that can be customised to meet specific needs and educational goals.

About the Presenter
Leonie is a passionate leader in mathematics education with experience across all school levels. A former principal and coach, she now leads the Mathematics Association of Victoria team, supporting educators to build strong maths programs through research-informed strategies and resource development.

Early Learning & OSHC Staff | Anthony Semann

This practical and thought-provoking presentation explores two essential elements of early childhood practice: critical reflection and pedagogical documentation. Educators and leaders are often caught in a cycle of ticking boxes—documenting what they think they should and reflecting only at surface level. This session invites participants to pause, question, and reconnect with the why behind these practices. We will unpack what critical reflection truly means and how it looks in everyday teaching, moving beyond routine conversations to deep, meaningful thinking that drives professional growth. We’ll also explore how to create pedagogical documentation that tells a story of learning, thinking, and relationships—rather than simply describing events.

About the Presenter
Anthony Semann is an early childhood educator and change agent, driven by a passion for equity, social justice, and lifelong learning. His work focuses on transforming practice through strong relationships and a commitment to justice in education and beyond.

Office Admin and Finance Staff | Rod Cassie

  • most difficult leadership assignment we will ever face – ourselves;

  • leadership tension that exists within a school environment;

  • application of the Australians Together Learning Framework to schools;

  • next steps of influence that we can take tomorrow.
